Bordeaux map

Bordeaux’s reds are often divided into ‘left’ and ‘right’ bank wines.

On the left bank of the Gironde, wines are predominantly made with the Cabernet Sauvignon grape with varying proportions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot; this generally produces a more austere style yet perfumed with blackcurrant and cedar wood. The most important left bank area is the Haut Médoc, especially the communes of Margaux, St Julien, Pauillac and St Estephe. Merlot dominates the right bank, resulting in more supple and fleshy wines – key areas of note on the right bank are St Emilion and Pomerol.

Bordeaux for centuries have been producing food-friendly wine, with a vast majority of vineyards owned by the same family for generations. They know their vines intimately and every year they strive to produce the best wine possible.

The Bordeaux practice of blending different grape varieties results in wines with subtle balanced flavours which do not overpower the food.

There is a Bordeaux for every type of meal- whether haute cuisine and elaborate or homemade and simple- and for all budgets. We have selected three of our finest Bordeaux examples to show you just how well a Bordeaux wine can compliment a meal perfectly.
